I've been riding Supermotos (WR250X that I blew up when I tried to turbo and now a KTM 690 SMC) for all of a whole 6 months. I am absolutely in love with my KTM and hardly touch my sportbike any more. I am planning on bringing it out to an ART on the Kart Track and I was looking for any pointers on riding style. I've done 5 or 6 other track days (mostly ARTs, one APEX day) on big street bikes but never on anything like this.
Counter steering seems wild to me but I'm willing to give it a shot if it really helps. I've been reading a few posts on smj about foot out vs. knee out and it seems that foot out is better for the tight, slower stuff. I also saw some replies about people riding foot out and tearing their ACLs and getting pins/rods in their ankles. I of course do not want to get hurt or wad my bike, and won't be going past my comfort zone but I would like to let loose a little more than I do on the street since after all, that's what the track is for.
Any tips or am I asking a retarded question that's been answered a million times over else where? |

Believe it or not you are on the right path wondering about knee down vs foot out. You are on the right path becasue you are thinking about it! That means you will try both and then pick one based on your own comfort level.
I think all new Supermoto riders go through a process where they figure out which style they are most comfortable with.
I've tried both, I settled on foot out, probably more because of my motocross background. Now I am in the process of refining my foot-out style. I see both styles used successfully, and even a combination of both styles on the same track depending on the particular corner.
As far as injuries are concerned, in Supermoto they are virtually non-existant! After years of MX racing, my experience is that there is usually at least 1 ambulance run per MX race. In Supermoto? Never! The same comparison is true for minor injuries also. Supermoto is 99% safer than MX.
Another thing I've noticed between MX and Supermoto is that in MX when you fall down, you will be used for traction. In Supermoto, in the rare case where somebody falls down, the next rider behind you will stop, direct traffic around you, help you, take you home and feed you dinner! |
