Officer hurt in crash during charity ride
The Salt Lake Tribune
A Sandy police officer suffered a sprained ankle and road rash Saturday when his motorcycle struck a fellow officer's bike during the 55th annual Wendover Ride for a Cure. The officer, who was participating in the event benefiting Utah's Muscular Dystrophy Association, was northbound on Interstate 15 just before the 600
South off-ramp, said Sandy police Sgt. Victor Quezada. When traffic ahead slowed, the officer failed to stop in time and ran into the back of another police motorcycle.

I've often wondered why motorcycle officers don't wear proper protective gear.
It's just funny how often you hear the "I'm sick of scraping you guys off the pavement" speech, even if you're wearing a proper riding jacket, helmet, gloves, and boots. But then you see these cops on bikes wearing a short sleeved shirt, an open faced helmet, and some long boots. Umm, okay.

Well, here it goes....
There will always be a motorcyclists that crashes on this Annual Wendover ride. Sorry it had to be a cop. But if he/she was paying attention, this would not have happened.
As for the protective gear, I just don't understand why they choose to wear short sleeved shirts. In Hawaii they wore long sleeved shirts or leather jackets most of the time. The cops here are just stupid!
And I'm sure there is a special reason the cops wear a three-quarter helmet.

i assume the 3/4 helmet is for communications and such... too bad there isn't some sort of "flip face" helmet that would allow for protection while still easily allowing you to communicate via radio or to a driver. And perhaps some sort of thick material they could wear over their arms and torso in case of a fall. something resistive to abrasion.
oh well, i guess we just don't have that sort of high tech gear yet.

Yah, supposedly they don't wear full-face helmets so if they have to do a "hot stop" or whatnot, they don't have to try and fumble with the shield before yelling to get out of the car, etc.

I don't understand the 3/4 and 1/2 helmets.
I don't understand the short sleeve shirts.
I don't understand the riding in such close formation front to back and side to side at high and low speeds.
I don't understand riding bikes that are slow, handle like crap, unreleiable, and take a mile to stop.
I know it is all suppossed to be very cool, but to me it just exhibitionist macho bullshit.

HJC Symax is a full face with a flip-up frontal area. Perhaps they could use that helmet.

BTW, most of the HDs are gone in Hawaii. They now ride BMWs. Damn those bikes were fast...

oh i was being totally sarcastic. i know a couple of helmet manufacturers have flip ups. and the mystery material i was talking about was "leather"

The close "Chips" formation blows me away too. I was talking to some motorcops who were bragging about this one time, riding up little cottonwood in close formation, the crome bars around the saddlebags on two bikes riding side-by-side, got hung up on eachother. The two bikes couldn't seperated and they ended up crashing - this from one of the guys who crashed.
They were talking about how cool that was - while I'm thinking "who gave these monkeys the authority to pull me over for going 5mph over the posted limit in Parleys Canyon again?" So that I could get the "I'm tired of scraping you guys off the pavement speach".
